A Late Walk By Robert Frost
"When I go up through the mowing field,
The headless aftermath,
Smooth-laid like thatch with the heavy dew,
Half closes the garden path.
And when I come to the garden ground,
The whir of sober birds
Up from the tangle of withered weeds
Is sadder than any words
A tree beside the wall stands bare,
But a leaf that lingered brown,
Disturbed, I doubt not, by my thought,
Comes softly rattling down.
I end not far from my going forth
By picking the faded blue
Of the last remaining aster flower
To carry again to you"
Poetic Techniques
Poetic Techniques used in the poem is Rhyme, Alliteration, Similes, Metaphors and Personification.
Rhyme is when words rhyme with each other. In this poem the rhyming used is in every 2nd and 4th stanza.
The Rhyming used in the:
The first Stanza:
Aftermath
garden Path
The second Stanza:
Birds
Words
The third Stanza:
Brown
Down
The fourth Stanza:
Blue
You
The use of this technique is that it gives the poem a rhythm.
Alliteration is when at least 2 words or more start with the same letter.
The Alliteration used in the poem is "Garden Ground" and "Withered Weeds"
This is used as it emphasizes emotions. In this instance "Withered Weeds" indicates that the weeds are wrinkled and are slowly dying.
The Similes used in the poem is "The headless aftermath smooth-laid like thatch with the heavy dew".
The use of the simile in the poem is that it compares the mowed field (the headless aftermath) with the heavy dew. This helps us get an image of what the shape is of the headless aftermath.
The poem also includes Metaphors. The metaphor in the poem is "The whir of sober birds up from the tangle of withered weeds is sadder than any words"
This tells us that the whir of the sober (sad) birds IS sadder than any words
The word IS tells us that the sober birds IS sad.
Lastly they used Personification which in the poem is "A tree beside the wall stands bare" and "Sober Birds"
The word Bare tells us that the tree is exposed and nothing is covering it. Bare is not used to describe a plant (in this case a tree) but a human. This is called Personification.
Also Sober birds is Personification because it tells us that the birds are sad and that Winter is coming and Summer is ending.
