I WANDERED LONELY AS A CLOUD BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company;
I gazed-and gazed-but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company;
I gazed-and gazed-but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Techniques
The Techniques used in the poem is: Rhyming Metaphors Similes Alliteration Personification Repetition The Rhyming used was a pattern of ABABCC. This is used to give the rhythm of the poem showing that the persona is on a journey. Metaphors used was Fluttering and Dancing IN the breeze. This tells us that the Daffodils IS dancing. Similes used was I Wandered Lonely as a cloud & Continuous as the Stars that Shine. I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud represents how the Persona is alone and lonely like a cloud. This gives us the feeling of being alone. Continuous as the Stars that shines tells the reader that the Daffodils are shiny, gleaming and beautiful. This emphasizes its beauty. Alliteration used is Ten Thousand and Beside the lake Beneath the trees. This emphasizes the "T" and the "B" sound. It slows the pace down and makes the reader more engaged in the poem. It then used Personification which was "Tossing their heads in a Sprightly Dance", "When all at once i saw a crowd" and Fluttering and Dancing in the Breeze." This is giving human characteristics to non human things. It was used as Daffodils don't have heads, they don't dance and they don't flutter. It Finally included repetition which was used "I Gazed and Gazed but little thought". Gazed and Gazed tells us that the Persona is staring and just keeps staring. This gives us the feeling that the persona doesn't know what to think. |
What the Poem is about?
The poem is about person who finds Daffodils fluttering in the breeze on the shore of a lake that is stretched along the shore. There is just so much Daffodils that it reminds the person of the Stars of the Milky Way as the Milky Way has millions of stars. In this instance there is millions of Daffodils. The person then compares the Daffodils to the waves of the lake and believes that the Daffodils out stood the waves as the Daffodils have more "Glee". The person then "Gazes" wondering what the experience of sight had brought. So when the person is sitting down on his couch and feels lonely the person thinks of the Daffodils dancing. This makes the Person feel happy remembering memories from that day when the Daffodils gave him company. |
